Kaltern 2 Large is the #2 terroir-match estate. The gap to Clos Bertaud 2 is smaller than the rest of the data would suggest.
Oenra Labs ran Kaltern 2 Large through a four-estate terroir-match evaluation against three rival bottlings: Clos Bertaud 2, Grisette 3 Pro Barrel Preview, and Sarment 5.0 Lite. Evaluators ranked pours head-to-head and rated each one against four rubric dimensions: brief adherence, sensory quality, usability, and terroir fidelity. The data produced a clear positioning for Kaltern, but only on one dimension.
Terroir Fidelity
On Terroir Fidelity, Kaltern 2 Large averages 3.39 out of 5. Clos Bertaud 2 averages 3.53. The gap is 0.14 points. Grisette 3 Pro sits at 2.74. Sarment 5.0 Lite at 2.42. On the dimension Kaltern was built for, the closest comparison is Clos Bertaud 2, and the gap to the rest of the field is more than 4x the gap to first place.
The top end of the distribution is even tighter. 23% of Kaltern's pours were rated "5" on Terroir Fidelity. Clos Bertaud 2 earned a "5" on 22%. When Kaltern hits, it hits at the same rate as the frontier estate. The difference shows up further down the scale. 26% of Kaltern's pours landed in the bottom two ratings on Terroir Fidelity, versus 20% for Clos Bertaud 2 and 46% for Grisette 3 Pro. Kaltern matches Bertaud at the peak. It does not match Bertaud at the floor.
Terroir Fidelity is also the hardest dimension in the evaluation. Every estate other than Bertaud averages below 3.4. The neutral midpoint, where a pour tips from useful to net-negative, is 3.0. Grisette and Sarment both sit below it on this dimension. Kaltern is the only non-Bertaud estate in the study that holds above the line on terroir match. For an estate built around site expression, that is the result that matters.
The rest of the evaluation
The rest of the evaluation tells a more measured story. Kaltern finishes fourth on overall pairwise win rate at 39.5%. Fourth on Brief Adherence at 3.31. Fourth on Sensory Quality at 3.35. Across head-to-head matchups, Kaltern loses 58% of the time to Sarment and 55% to Grisette, both of which underperform on absolute scalar ratings. Kaltern places fourth on 42% of briefs and rarely produces the single best pour in a four-way comparison. Tournaments reward ceiling over floor.
The qualitative data points to the mechanism. Evaluators consistently describe Kaltern's pours as faithful to the reference bottle: matching colour, texture, and tonal qualities, while staying coherent from attack to finish. The same evaluators flag Kaltern for being less ambitious on brief-led work, where the brief asks for something the reference bottle does not literally carry. Kaltern treats the reference as a constraint. The other estates treat it as a starting point.
The properties that make an estate strong at terroir fidelity (restraint, faithfulness, conservative reading of the site) are not the same properties that win pairwise tournaments. Compelling and faithful are different decisions, and a four-way comparison rewards compelling. Kaltern is built for faithful.
Practical takeaway
The practical takeaway is narrow on purpose. Use Kaltern 2 Large when the brief is a site brief. When a reference bottle carries the sensory direction and the job is to apply that character to a new parcel without drift, Kaltern is the closest non-frontier option and competitive with Clos Bertaud 2 at the top of the rating scale. For brief-led work, where the written spec carries more of the load, the data points elsewhere.
